Production Process

Breeders

1

Selection of male and female breeders of diverse origin and best phenotypes in their populations.

Close

Spawning Induction

0,5 days2

Process is performed separately for males and females by gradually increasing the temperature of the sea water in individual aquariums.

Close

Fertilization

0,5 days3

Fertilization takes place by mixing the male and female gametes selected from the induction aquariums, depending on the number obtained, with an average proportion of three females to one male.

Larva

4 days4

Process where larvae (veligers) keep swimming for approximately four days. No food is added during this process.

Close

Post-Larva

8 months5

Consists of settlement of larvae in the substrate. Polycarbonate plates with natural benthic microalgae attached through the introduction of sea water, a process that requires natural light. These microalgae are consumed by the post-larval spats until they reach the seed stage, which lasts eight months. After that, they are transferred to larger tanks with shelters.

Shelters

21 months6

State maintained until they are 29 months old. Conditions like salt water freshness, aeration, crop density and food dosage (exclusively macroalgae) are controlled.

Farming

11-13 months to marketable size7

Final stage. Salt water freshness, aeration, crop density and food dosage (exclusively macroalgae) is controlled until abalone reach mean weights of 140 grams, at which time they are harvested.
